Strength, Community, and a Day at the Beach
As part of our ongoing Footnotes from Campus initiative, a student giveback project to empower college strength communities, we sent care packages to powerlifting clubs across the country. Inside: our 1HUND lifting shoes, a disposable film camera, and a challenge to capture whatever felt real.
When the package arrived at Aztec Barbell, a rising force in collegiate powerlifting founded at San Diego State University in 2024, they delivered something special: not just great lifts, but great energy.
With 30 current members and 14 athletes sent to Collegiate Nationals in just two years, Aztec Barbell has quickly become a home base for lifters of all levels, from competitors chasing national medals to students simply seeking a like-minded community.
First Impressions: Built for the Platform
Aztec lifters had one word for their first experience in the 1HUND shoes: comfort. But that’s not where the praise stopped.
“They were very comfortable and geared towards powerlifting, with great grip and a shape that contours directly to your foot.”
From foot shape to floor grip, the fit was designed for stability, giving every lifter a solid base to move confidently through squats, deadlifts, and everything in between.
Strength Through Shared Experience
One of the most memorable moments Aztec Barbell shared with us didn’t happen under a barbell, it happened on the beach.
“We had a beach social where members brought food and just enjoyed each other’s company. It was a great way for everyone to meet new people and make new friends.”
That spirit, of lifting each other up both inside and outside the gym, defines what Footnotes from Campus is all about.
Their photo day reflected that same energy: full of laughter, good vibes, and the kind of chemistry that can’t be faked. Behind the scenes, the team captured moments of togetherness that reminded us that strength isn’t always about numbers, sometimes it’s about who’s beside you.
From Three Lifters to a Movement
Aztec Barbell was born from the vision of three friends who loved powerlifting and community in equal measure. Though they’ve since graduated, their legacy lives on through a growing team that has built the club’s reputation through tabling, social events, outreach, and a consistent presence at meets.
Their mission today? To provide a space where every student feels welcome, no matter how they choose to engage with the sport.
“We want to support those who want to compete at Collegiate Nationals and also those who just want to make friends and share a love for lifting.”
A Message to New Lifters
For students curious about powerlifting but unsure where to start, Aztec Barbell has a message:
“The powerlifting community is like no other. Nobody cares about your numbers, everyone just wants to see you improve. We host team lifts and events all semester long where you can learn, grow, and have fun.”
These Are Their Footnotes
Captured on film. Grounded in real moments. Framed by squat racks and sunsets.
To Aztec Barbell, thank you for showing us what strength in community truly looks like. We’re proud to stand alongside you.
